¹⁰ Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites^(A) who had come to the gate^(B) of his city.

¹¹ “No, my lord,” he said. “Listen to me; I give^[a](A) you the field, and I give^[b] you the cave that is in it. I give^[c] it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.”

⁹ Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses^(A) that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. ¹⁰ I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite,^(B) Mahlon’s widow, as my wife,^(C) in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown.^(D) Today you are witnesses!^(E)”

¹¹ Then the elders and all the people at the gate^(F) said, “We are witnesses.^(G) May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah,^(H) who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah^(I) and be famous in Bethlehem.^(J)

⁹ so I bought the field^(A) at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels^[a] of silver.^{(B) 10} I signed and sealed the deed,^(C) had it witnessed,^(D) and weighed out the silver on the scales. ¹¹ I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— ¹² and I gave this deed to Baruch^(E) son of Neriah,^(F) the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

¹³ “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: ¹⁴ ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed^(G) and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time.
